Duties and Responsibilities:
• Consistently manage an ongoing caseload of up to 100 clients
• Assist unemployed Aboriginal clients in the GTA to obtain employment

• Responsible for ongoing follow-up with clients who are actively job searching and participating in skills based training programs
• Provide advocacy with regards to government support programs including Ontario Works, EI, ODSP, WSIB etc.

Qualifications:
• Able to consistently contribute towards department goals and objectives
• Must work well in a TEAM environment
• Knowledge of employers and grassroots agencies within the Aboriginal community
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Conflict Resolution skills
• Ability to work one-on-one with clients  who may or may not have barriers to employment
• Competent assessing clients job readiness including providing assistance with cover letter writing, resume development job search techniques and interview skills
• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office 2007 and experience using electronic case management systems

Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training serves the employment and training needs of the Aboriginal population in the Greater Toronto Area. We have conditional funding approval from the Ontario Government to offer a Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Training Program for Aboriginal youth in partnership with George Brown College.

Program components for 25 participants include: Pre-employment skills training, academic upgrading, Carpentry Training, work placement, job coaching and job placement. Academic upgrading and carpentry training will be offered at George Brown College.

The following position is available in this project. All positions are 40-week contracts and are anticipated to begin February 20, 2012.

Job Coach

Responsible for ensuring retention of participants in the program; participating in outreach and recruitment of candidates; development and delivery of pre-employment and job preparation program; providing support and direction to each participant, including personal counseling, referral to other services, problem-solving; interpret Aboriginal culture, mediation of job-related conflict; preparing reports; processing financial requests; keeps attendance records for staff and participants; maintains confidentiality; assists in organizing special events; sets up meetings, takes messages as requested.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of Ontario’s apprenticeship program and construction industry; experience working with Aboriginal youth in urban setting; demonstrated knowledge of employment barriers faced by Aboriginal youth; minimum of three years experience job coaching or counseling; computer literacy; excellent interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; in-depth knowledge of Aboriginal culture, values and traditions.

JOB DEVELOPER-Employment Resource Centre

SUMMARY: The Job Developer under the Job Matching and Placement Component of Employment Ontario’s Employment Services (ES) will focus on providing Job Matching and Placement Services to two (2) clientele groups – Employers who require assistance with their recruiting, hiring and training needs through training incentives and supports; and Aboriginal Job Seekers who require an experiential placement to match their skills and interests with employment opportunities.  The Job Developer may also provide Job Retention Assistance, for those clients who need additional coaching and mentoring in order to maintain employment or to make the next step on their career path.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Matching and Placement

•      Conduct active outreach to employers to identify opportunities and promote Job Matching and Placement Support Services for Aboriginal people • Outreach to target employers to generate leads through cold-calls, personal contacts, and networking;

•      Analyze the needs of new and existing employers and guide/support them in all aspects of their recruiting, hiring and training needs

•      Seek out, grow, and nurture relationships with community employers to ensure the effective and professional representation of Aboriginal people

•      Match individuals who are unlikely to succeed in conducting their own job search, even with support due to other barriers to their employment, according to their skills and interests with work opportunities

•      Facilitate work opportunities and negotiation of employment relationships on behalf of clients including the preparation of all placement agreements and contracts with individuals and employers that include training objectives and commitments and financial incentives

•      Set up experiential or on-the-job training for individual participants with employers including volunteer, job test and hire, work experience and on the job training opportunities •      Develop a training plan with the employer and the participant and negotiate the incentive as appropriate.

•      Review and establish strategies to identify gaps where new opportunities lie, resulting in an increase in placements for our clients (both existing and new employers)

•      Provide financial support to remove barriers to participation

•      Ensure that employers meet all eligibility criteria; conduct at least one site visit per employers prior to placements to confirm a suitable and safe work environment Job Matching and Placement con’t

•      When necessary, provide employers with sensitivity training, workplace safety training and information on accommodation needs

•      Conduct monitors and provide job coaching and support during the placement including identifying and resolving workplace issues that may affect participant success

•      Administer contract with employers, including the timely processing and payment of financial incentives   Job Retention

•      Provide additional support to individuals and/or the employer as appropriate

•      Develop support plans with the individual and the employer as is appropriate

•      Link participants with Employment Counsellors to provide support during and after the job placement

•      Provide documentation of a clear rationale to support the participant accessing the job retention part of the ES service including the service plan and any preliminary work done that supports the clients need for retention services.   Additional Duties and Responsibilities

•      All aspects of the Job Developer position will utilize the Employment Ontario EOIS system for tracking clients and employers, conducting follow up and recording activities

•      Ensure all client and employer files are complete with all necessary documentation as per Employment Ontario guidelines

•      Job Developer will liaise with Employment Counsellors for updating individual action plans and supports

•      Provide assistance to both Resource and Information or to other areas of the ES delivery model as required

•      Flexibility to work with other staff and clients within the Miziwe Biik umbrella of services and programs

Skills:

•      Computer literate and internet experience and familiar with using career resources

•     Reliable Vehicle an Asset as this position requires frequent travel in the GTA

Information Session: Carpentry Program

Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training in partnership with George Brown College Presents:

The first 9 weeks of this 6- 8 month Pre-Apprenticeship Program will provide interested candidates with Academic Upgrading and Prior Learning Achievement Recognition (PLAR) with the Toronto District School Board, towards achieving an Ontario High School Diploma (Upon Completion) and/or refreshing their academic skills. During this period participants will also develop their Resume and Job Retention Skills with First Aid Training, WHMIS and Fall Protection Certification to follow. During the next stage of training, participants will spend 10 weeks at George Brown College earning their Level 1 Carpentry Training and 1 week of a Secondary Trade. Finally participants are supported in obtaining construction and carpentry related jobs. Tools, transportation, and training allowances are some of the possible supports for eligible participants.

Program Components include:

• Orientation to Construction Workplace
• Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Training – Basic skills module
• Tool kits, Safety equipment and textbooks
• Academic and Employment Skills Training
• Job Coaching

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement a strategy for placing Aboriginal clients with employers in the GTA;
