Info Session: Carpentary Program

Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training in partnership with George Brown College Presents:

The first 9 weeks of this 6- 8 month Pre-Apprenticeship Program will provide interested candidates with Academic Upgrading and Prior Learning Achievement Recognition (PLAR) with the Toronto District School Board, towards achieving an Ontario High School Diploma (Upon Completion) and/or refreshing their academic skills. During this period participants will also develop their Resume and Job Retention Skills with First Aid Training, WHMIS and Fall Protection Certification to follow.

During the next stage of training, participants will spend 10 weeks at George Brown College earning their Level 1 Carpentry Training and 1 week of a Secondary Trade.

Finally participants are supported in obtaining construction and carpentry related jobs. Tools, transportation, and training allowances are some of the possible supports for eligible participants.

Program Components include:

• Guest Speakers • Orientation to Construction Workplace • Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Training – Basic skills module • Tool kits, Safety equipment and textbooks • Academic and Employment Skills Training • Job Coaching • Assistance to secure employment upon completion of the program

Applicant Requirements and Recruitment:

• 15 of the available spaces will be reserved for persons ages 16 to 24 • Interested in improving reading, writing and math skills • Minimum Grd.10 or equivalent, but, Grd. 11 to 12 preferred

Info Session: Second Career-FEBRUARY

This 1 hour session provides clients with an introduction and overview of the Second Career program.

In addition clients will learn about the application process, participant criteria and they will receive a Q & A document to take away.

We will also open up the floor for a question period at the end of the session.

There are three categories: Aboriginal Business Woman, Aboriginal Business Man, Aboriginal Business Youth (30 and under).

Be sure to celebrate the spirit of Aboriginal entrepreneurship by nominating someone you know in the community.
Over the past decade winners have included business consultants, IT innovators, artists and retail operators.

The deadline for nomination forms is Friday February 24, 2012, 4.p.m.

The Awards will be held in March 2012 and are again sponsored by Miziwe Biik Development Corp. and RBC.

Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Opportunity

All clientele of Miziwe Biik who are interested in obtaining an apprenticeship with the Sheet Metal  Workers International Association (Local 30) must book an appointment with the Local 30 office in Scarborough.

The next step of the application process will be to take the mechanical aptitude test.  This will be done on a computer.

Current intake runs to November 3, 2011.  Test dates are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Time is of essence and it is highly recommended that appointments are booked as quickly as possible.

All applicants must have at least a grade 10 education and must bring proof, i.e., transcripts.

Please bring along several pieces of ID and most importantly, your SIN card.

All applications will be reviewed.  All applicants that pass the mechanical aptitude test will be contacted by mail to attend a two-day orientation.
