Second Career Information

Second Career provides laid-off workers with skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario and with financial support.  Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so you may be asked to contribute what you can to your training or education.  Miziwe Biik is now a Second Career Assessment Centre.  If you are interested in Second Career – please check for the next Second Career information session or contact your Employment counsellor on how we can assist you.

Who is eligible for Second Career?

  • Individuals laid-off on or after January 1, 2005
  • Unemployed
  • Demonstrate there is a demand for the training request with evidence of employment prospects at the completion of training

Laid-Off”:  Those individuals whose employment contract has ended; those individuals who have received Employment Insurance (EI) maternity or paternity benefits and are seeking to re-enter the labour force; those individuals who have left work due to medical reasons.

Unemployed”: Individuals working less than 20 hours per week; who may have taken an interim job to make ends meet after their initial lay-off; on salary continuation or who have received severance pay.

Training:

  • Short-term (i.e. under 6 months) and Long-term (i.e. up to 24 months) training is allowable.
  • Training cannot exceed two (2) years; additional considerations maybe given
  • Must lead to a certificate or diploma
  • University training will not be considered
  • Private Career College programs may be considered

An application for Second Career must be approved by the Ministry before you start training.

Second Career Application processing can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks once the application is received by the Ministry (time-frame can vary accordingly).  It is important to gauge the time-line in relation to start dates of programs.
