Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training

In Partnership with George Brown College and Toronto Council Fire Cultural Centre will be hosting a Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Programme.

This 32-week Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program will provide interested candidates with academic testing, upgrading and Level 1 Carpentry training – Level 1. 

We are currently in the process of starting this programme mid-February. Candidate selection will start immediately.  Staff from Miziwe Biik will do candidate selection, with input by our partner representatives. There are 20 seats available, with at least 15 being set aside for those between 15 and 24. Participants who do not have Grade 12 level education (English and Math) will be provided with upgrading. Training allowances may be available to those who qualify. Please speak to your employment counselor or case worker for more information.

• Orientation to Construction Workplace
• Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Training – Level 1

ABORIGINAL ARTISTS & ARTS MANAGERS

January 2010…Continuing with the Professional Development Workshop Series, Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training presents Copyright 101. You are invited to join a discussion that will cover the basics of property rights as well as will cover some issues surrounding cultural appropriation and traditional knowledge (TK). The workshop is FREE with snacks and refreshments provided.

Arts Presenter/Consultant, Denise Bolduc will offer insight into some essential information regarding the pros and cons of copyright and Indigenous traditional knowledge. Included in this
presentation will be the screening of Guarding the Family Silver. This documentary film questions where Indigenous and traditional knowledge, language and symbols fit in a world consumed by globalization, commodification and commercialization. Directors Toby Mills and Moana Maniapoto’s film presents an exploration of intellectual copyright from a Maori perspective. Denise Bolduc brings knowledge and information to this discussion from her work with the Creators Rights Alliance and the Indigenous Peoples Caucus.

SMALL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Miziwe Biik’s Aboriginal Business Resource Centre (ABRC) will be offering a Small Business Certificate program.  The program is free to Aboriginal people.

The program will offer twelve, three-hour sessions between 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. over a period of four weeks, starting Tuesday January 12 and concluding Thursday February 4, 2010.

An information session will be held regarding the course on Wednesday December 9, 2009 at 12.00 p.m. in the ABRC (lunch will be served).  The ABRC is located on the second floor of Miziwe Biik at the 167 Gerrard Street East entrance.

The program will concentrate on the development of a draft business plan during the four weeks. In addition, variety of visiting subject matter experts will deliver relevant development on subjects, such as:

• Visioning your business plan’s mission statement
• Small business structures, registration and licences
• Marketing and promotion
• Making sales/branding
• Business budgeting
• Pricing your product/service
• Sources of capital
• Small business administration and operation
• Networking

The certificate of completion allows participants to apply for community-based micro-loan and grant programs operated by Miziwe Biik, Aboriginal Business Canada, Alterna Savings, Canadian Youth Business Foundation and others.

Space is limited to a maximum of ten people.

• Visioning your business plan’s mission statement
• Small business structures, registration and licences
• Marketing and promotion
• Making sales/branding
• Business budgeting
• Pricing your product/service
• Sources of capital
• Small business administration and operation
• Networking

The certificate of completion allows participants to apply for community-based micro-loan and grant programs operated by Miziwe Biik, Aboriginal Business Canada, Alterna Savings, Canadian Youth Business Foundation and others.

Duties and Responsbilities:

• Assist unemployed Aboriginal clients in the GTA to obtain employment and training
• Responsible to conduct the common assessment process, intake interview for all new registered clients
• Responsible for a return-to-work action plan for all active clients who are job searching and job ready
• Interview clients to obtain employment history, educational background and career and training goals
• Identify barriers to employment and assist clients to develop job readiness skills and job search strategies
• Advise clients of training opportunities and institutions that are available to them within the GTA
• Responsible for inputting interventions, action plans, updating, closing clients case management files in Contact IV Database
• Responsible for ongoing follow-up with clients who are actively job searching and participating in training programs

Qualifications:

• Previous employment counselling experience and training an asset
• Knowledge of employment and training programs offered within the Aboriginal community
• Excellent verbal and communication skills
• Ability to assess client strengths and areas of improvement to assist them with their job searching
• Excellent computer knowledge and ability to adapt in a PC environment which includes the use of Contact IV software
• Capability to manage a caseload through the Contact IV Database
• Able to work within and contribute to a team environment
• College Diploma in Counselling or Career Counselling an asset.
• Ability to respect confidentiality

SMALL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Miziwe Biik’s Aboriginal Business Resource Centre (ABRC) will be offering a Small Business Certificate program.  The program is free to Aboriginal people.

The program will offer twelve, three-hour sessions between 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. over a period of four weeks, starting Tuesday May 12 and concluding Thursday June 4, 2009.

An information session will be held regarding the course on Wednesday May 6,  2009 at 12.00 p.m. in the ABRC (lunch will be served).  The ABRC is located on the second floor of Miziwe Biik at the 167 Gerrard Street East entrance.

WHMIS and First Aid

WHMIS and First Aid Training

Miziwe Biik offers certified training in WHMIS and First Aid Training to clients who require this for the workplace or as a part of their training programme. Please contact the Project Department to find out when the next sessions will take place. A minimum number is required for each training session.

Carpentry Programme Information

Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship
Programme

The first 3 months of this 6- 8 months Pre-Apprenticeship Program will provide interested candidates with Academic Upgrading with Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre and the Toronto District School Board towards achieving an Ontario High School Diploma and/or refreshing their academic skills.

During this period participants will also develop their Resume with First Aid training, WHIMIS, Fall Protection certification. During the next, stage of training participants will spend 2 months at George Brown College completing their Level 1 Carpentry Training.

Finally participants are supported in obtaining construction and carpentry related jobs. Tools, transportation, and training allowances are some of the possible supports for eligible participants.

Program Components include:
    * Guest Speakers
    * Orientation to Construction Workplace
    * Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Training – Basic skills module
    * Tool kits, Safety equipment and textbooks
    * Academic and Employment Skills Training
    * Job Coaching
    * Assistance to secure employment upon completion of the program

 Applicant Requirements:
    * Interested in developing or continuing a good work history and references
    * Interested in improving reading writing and math skills
    * Abstaining from substance abuse of any kind during attendance of the program

A feasibility study is being undertaken by Miziwe Biik to look into the viability of establishing a small business centre to be located in central Toronto focusing on the Toronto tourism market.

The Centre would assist Aboriginal entrepreneurs to market their products/services and would provide a number of business support services. An anchor tenant has already been identified and other anchor tenants are being sought.

CARPENTRY PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME

TORONTO COUNCIL FIRE NATIVE CULTURAL CENTRE


This 31-week Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship Program will provide Aboriginal candidates with academic testing, upgrading and Level 1 Carpentry Training – for registration and employment as General Carpenter Apprentices.

Upcoming Information sessions will be held at Aboriginal agencies across the GTA in September.  Candidate selection will begin immediately, contingent upon funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.  No experience required.  Women are especially encouraged to apply.

Staff from Miziwe Biik will do candidate selection, with input by George Brown College representatives and/or construction employers. Participants who do not have Grade 10 level education (English and Math) will be provided with upgrading through Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre.
